Low and Humble (2014) - Flute, Violin, Tenor - Winner in VOX 3 Collective's call for scores; Nathaniel Hawthorne Festival. https://www.scribd.com/doc/248827493/Low-and-Humble Originally written for a Call for Scores, I liked this piece so much I decided to record it on my own. Loosely inspired by Spanish music I heard on the radio (where else? On "Exploring Music" with Bill McGlaughlin) that was written in 1325. The tenor voice sings exactly what is on the soldier's mind: his memory of himself leading up to where he is now. The flute and violin are his out-of-focus thoughts and emotions that stem from the in-focus thoughts.
Mr. Brown Rides Through Town (2014) - String Quartet http://www.scribd.com/doc/237777722/Mr-Brown-Rides-Through-Town I wrote this piece for a call for scores for string quartet. I had less than a month to complete the whole thing, and I was pretty happy with what I was able to come up with! I have yet to hear it played, though.
Numerical Associations (2013) - Solo Cello http://www.scribd.com/doc/230154078/Numerical-Associations Numerical Associations is a composition for solo cello. I decided to challenge myself and write a fugue, and then took it one step further and decided to make that fugue for a solo, non-keyboard instrument. While writing, I noticed that I would write the counter-subject one pitch class less than the subject, so I tried to exploit the relationship between the two. I then composed a prelude based on another numerical association. The piece still felt unfinished, so I composed a postlude based off of another association.
Ephemera (2013) - Solo Piano http://www.scribd.com/doc/207960043/Ephemera Ephemera was written on my own time so I could go back to my old ways: composing for solo piano, with no obligation to correlate the music with a non-musical entity. I love to write music like this, where the I am immersed in the music and the music only. "Ephemera" implies a piece of music that is never recorded. The listener should listen to the piece as it happens, rather than analyze it extra-musically.
Loop Synagogue: Stained Glass (2013) - 2 Double Basses http://www.scribd.com/doc/176065782/Loop-Synagogue-Stained-Glass This piece was commissioned by Access Contemporary Music to be performed at the Loop Synagogue in Chicago for the Open House Chicago event on the weekend of October 19/20, 2013. It was world premiered on October 20 at the Loop Synagogue, performed by Conner Hollingsworth and Anthony Sobun. The piece was very fulfilling for me to write, and I drew all of my inspiration from the beautiful stained glass window inside the synagogue.
Berceuse in C (2005/2013) - Solo Piano http://www.scribd.com/doc/169175814/Berceuse-in-C Originally written for the string orchestra at my high school, I revisited this piece and transcribed it for solo piano. I always enjoyed the melody and atmosphere of this piece, and was surprised at my younger self for structuring this piece in very crafty manner. The solo piano on the recording is myself, recorded September 7, 2013.
Food Song Cycle (2012) - Soprano with piano accompaniment http://www.scribd.com/doc/176277307/Food-Song-Cycle These songs were written from the perspective of humans being harvested as animals for their meat. It was inspired by my sister and father, both vegans, who would always ask me how I would feel to be trapped, caged, and eventually slaughtered for meat. The cycle consists of two songs, We Were Told of How and Recreate Us. More songs may be added at a later date. My sister, Marisa Buchheit, sings on the recording and I am playing piano. It was recorded on January 17, 2013 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Chicago.
Wood Chair (2010) - Solo Cello http://www.scribd.com/doc/170620252/Wood-Chair-for-Solo-Cello Written in my last year at Northwestern University, I wrote this with a cello student in the Graduate program. Having a cellist to bounce ideas off of, as well as play every few measures that I wrote, allowed me to explore various techniques and sounds like I never was able to do before. The cellist on the recording is Tahirah Whittington, and it was recorded in the spring of 2013 for Lee Hyla's Orchestration course at Northwestern University.
Warmth (2008) - Solo Piano http://www.scribd.com/doc/176061946/Warmth Through my junior year at college, I studied music composition under Seth Boustead at Access Contemporary Music. I wrote a lot of solo piano music to learn theory, structure, and to explore and expand upon my ideas. This is a prelude that during this time, that has always been well-received by those that hear it. This was recorded in 2010, with myself playing piano.
